The Seals at Horsey Beach

If you live within driving distance of the Norfolk coastline then I highly recommend a trip to Horsey Beach between late November and end of January to see the amazing colony of grey seals that come ashore to have their young. Only a few miles from the commercial seaside experience of Great Yarmouth, Horsey brings you right back to nature in a very up close and personal way.

A team of volunteers does an excellent job of informing visitors and keeping you to the designated walkways.  We parked at Horsey Gap (pay and display £1 per hour) and then followed a signed pathway for about 15 mins up into the dunes.  The walk was well worth it - hundreds of seals all along the beach as far as you can see.  The mother seals leave their young in the dunes to fend for themselves until their fur has become waterproof and they can head to the sea.  Many of them pick a spot just feet from the walkways so the photo ops are amazing and the seal seem very unphased by the steady stream of people (and dogs on leashes) passing among them.

At the car park there was a refreshment van serving burgers/hot dogs, hot soup, coffee and hot chocolate etc.  There's also a pub in the village which I understand is dog friendly and does very good food.

Linking up to a couple of other sites with lovely memories of pleasant days!

  1. Love this post - my brother lives close by and in the Summer we do the mill and the broads but haven't done the walk to the beach. I'm planning a Winter trip back to Norfolk this year so will definitely venture out to see the seals. I loved doing the Blakeney Point trip out on the boats as a child :)

    1. Thank you, definitely worth winter visit, I think the pups are there until around the end of January. Traffic probably eases a bit after this weekend too - we had to wait about half an hour to get into the car park!

  2. How wonderful to see these gorgeous pups up close like this. We see them swimming off the rocks in cornwall but not on the beach. A real treat worth visiting Norfolk for. Wonderful photos, thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.
